The Gathering - Kelley Armstrong This review was completed by Camille Morales, staff reviewer with the YA Fantasy Guide.I’ve wanted to read The Gathering ever since I finished Kelley’s Darkest Powers trilogy (amazing trilogy, by the way), so I was very, very happy when I got it in the mail. And this book did not disappoint.I can’t say much about this book without spoiling it. It’s basically about a girl named Maya, who has this birthmark that is shaped like a paw. She’s very likeable—she’s smart, she’s funny, she loves animals…she’s sort of like one of my best friends, actually. And I just realized this. Anyway, she has a friend named Daniel, and they’re both grieving because their best friend, Serena, died in an accident. Maya was there, but she can’t explain why Serena died—she drowned, but it’s obviously impossible, because Serena was a swimmer. So Maya told herself she would find out why Serena had died so unexpectedly. She also blamed herself for not being able to save her. Daniel (I really liked Daniel) was Serena’s boyfriend, and…well, both Daniel and Maya still miss Serena and they can’t really believe she’s gone at times. They know she is, but they don’t want to accept it at times. It’s like she’s still there, but she isn’t. It’s sad. But, as Maya goes on with her normal life—taking care of animals, school, being with family and hanging out with Daniel—she starts noticing odd things happening with the animals. Also, the new guy, Rafe, is very mysterious and very hot. So, yeah. There is romance, but there isn’t too much of it. I liked the romance. I liked the friendship. I loved her parents. Her other friends. The mystery. The things she realizes. There was also a reference to Project Genesis, which is part of the Darkest Powers trilogy. I loved the reference. Well…this book was amazing. It had everything a YA book should have. I loved it very, very much. I love Kelley and her YA series. Everyone should go read her Darkest Powers trilogy and this book. Also, I don’t know if you want to read Darkest Powers before this one, because I think the characters from that trilogy will make an appearance on this one. I don’t know yet. But I loved both of them and I cannot wait for the sequel!I give this book a 5/5 stars, and I definitely recommend it! We will be featuring an interview with Kelley starting August 1st at http://www.yafantasyguide.com
