Book Review written by Brittany Truman, staff reviewer with the YA Fantasy Guide.Laurel hasn't seen Tamani since she begged him to let her go last year. Though her heart still aches, Laurel is confident that David was the right choice. But just as life is returning to normal, Laurel discovers that a hidden enemy lies in wait. Once again, Laurel must turn to Tamani to protect and guide her, for the danger that now threatens Avalon is one that no faerie thought would ever be possible. And for the first time, Laurel cannot be sure that her side will prevail. This has to be the best book in the series! Aprilynne Pike did such a great job with this book it had me wanting more and more as I read and well I choose reading this over doing my homework...so that proves how good it is! I love that Aprilynne did the chapters from Laurel’s point of view and one from Tamani’s. It was a nice change to see life through Tamani’s eyes, to see everything he thought about Laurel, all of his thoughts, not just the ones he expressed. In Illusions you get to see how Tam dealt with seeing Laurel with David everyday, and all of those warring emotions. Also how he dealt with this new issue, adding on to the troll issue. I really liked how well he kept his emotions in check. There was one slip up but that turned out to be really great! I also loved seeing the faerie sentry side of Tamani, I got to see everything that involves him being Laurels fear-gleidhidh (guard), from staying inside and bearing school, to tracking different people like David, Chelsea and the new character. I also really enjoyed how Tamani and Shar or one of the other sentries Aaron, communicate. For example, how they order each other around, like in the military, with captains and generals, and just how faerie sentry life works. That was the one thing that Aprilynne Pike never showed us before. The faerie sentry world was really intriguing and I hope she writes about it more in the next book. I would love to know more of the details of how Tamani became the youngest- second in command to the gate captain. This part of illusions was one of my favorites to read. The background of Shar mom’s life and the Seelie and Unseelie courts was crazy to hear about, and how she got cast out and how all of those faeries were put in prison and are forbidden to garden - that was crazy and insane and that history was very strange to hear about because, when I think of Avalon I think of Tamani for one...but also the one place that Laurel can be completely safe without having to worry for her life. No death and destruction and people being or going insane.I can’t believe that I was actually annoyed at David in this book. Normally I love David, he seems like the perfect boyfriend, he’s kind, courteous and an overall great guy. But in this book he just gets too jealous and uses Laurel as a weapon against Tamani way to much, it seemed like every chance he got, he used Laurel against Tamani. Also, he would pick a fight with Tam with everything he said and thats something that I couldn’t stand, but I still love David and think he’s a great guy, he just got way to jealous. This has to be the best book in the series I love this book and I’ve almost read it twice already. I will read this again and again! Along with the first two! I can’t wait to see what Aprilynne Pike writes after the forth and final book in the series. I’m sure that I’ll pick it up and devour those books as well.SPOILERS OK THE END OF CHAPTER 22 WAS THE BEST CHAPTER IN THIS SERIES!!! I CANT BELIEVE LAUREL FINALLY PICKED TAMANI!! AND ACTUALLY KISSED HIM BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO NOT BECAUSE TAM KISSED HER!!!! This made me so excited I was actually yelling woooo!!! and yeah!!! in the house and I woke up my brother...I seriously thought I was alone but I guess not...this made me sooooo happy! I could tell that there was a part of Laurel that wanted Tamani more then David towards the middle of the book but I wasn’t sure that she would ever admit it. Thanksgiving was my favorite part as well and one of the reasons being is Tam said “I’m not asking you to make a decision I just want to kiss you” and “...then you can and I won’t expect you to have made your decision, sometimes a kiss is just a kiss” that made me melt inside and to hear him say that. I’m so happy for Tam that he can actually be with Laurel and not have to worry about her pushing him away completely because she still needs to figure out her feelings for David and Tam but its not like Tams not going to be with her because LAUREL WANTS TO BE WITH TAMANI!!!! I don’t think I can say that enough!!!! This is my favorite book mostly because of that reason but also because its the most action packed book of the series and well its just AWESOME! Ok now to the really creepy part...Yuki is a winter faerie and that freaked me out because she could get into Avalon if she ever got out of that circle Shar made. The ending of this book had my heart pounding and wishing it didn’t end where it did, because I want to know what is gonna happen to Yuki and WHOA IS KLEA AN UNSEELIE FAERIE that escaped??? and if she is, if she can find the gate she will be able to open it because she’ll have Yuki (if she ever escapes)...that part was really scary for me because I don’t want Avalon to be destroyed! This book was captivating and very entertaining! I cant wait to see more from Aprilynne Pike.
