This is simply the best book I have ever read in the young adult fantasy genre and I NEVER say that. For the record, I've made quite a business of the young adult fantasy market and I am very knowledgeable regarding the genre. That's why I can tell you that this book is amazing. Why you ask? Simply put, the characters are unique and the story is stellar. Every character was original and multi-faceted. Her characters were so different, yet they all managed to mesh together and become intricate parts of the story. I was especially enamored with Creagh's lead male character who is so unique to what we are used to in YA fantasy. Kelly broke the teen mold with him and gave us something new and perfect. The budding relationship between the lead characters is so honest that it seems almost real. Also, as a shocking twist, this heroine has parents who actually get along and play a major role in her life. Nothing scandalous or shocking - amazing! Who'd a thunk it?The story itself is wrapped perfectly around the life and mysterious death of Edgar Allen Poe. I'm originally from Baltimore and very familiar with his work so I can clearly see the amount of research that went into this novel. Kelly was spot on and managed to answer some of the lore surrounding the last several weeks of his life. I cannot believe that this is a debut novel. Her writing style is poetic and she had me on every page. This book is nearly 600 pages and I basically read it in one day. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys reading - period.
